Brazil may receive the first batch of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines in December, says secretary

In an interview with CNN Brasil, the health surveillance secretary at the Ministry of Health, Arnaldo Correia de Medeiros, said that the government has already ordered 100 million units of the experimental vaccine from AstraZeneca, developed at the University of Oxford, in the UK.

According to Medeiros, Brazil may receive the first batch of 15 million vaccines in December. If the tests prove the vaccine’s effectiveness by then, the vaccine application should also start in December. The vaccine is in the third phase of testing in several countries, including Brazil.

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is the most advanced among all those listed by the WHO. It is phase 3, the final phase, still in progress that will show whether the vaccine is effective in immunizing a large number of people.

In June, the Brazilian government signed a $127 million agreement to start producing the vaccine in the country, in partnership with the Osvaldo Cruz Foundation (FioCruz).
