  • Crackle offers free ad-supported access to movies and series from major studios, but the service left Latin America in 2019;
  • Plex, available in 17 Latin American countries, started as a way to organize personal media collections.

Plex, a video-on-demand app, announced a partnership to extend its free content library with Crackle, Sony‘s streaming platform that unfortunately ceased operations in Latin America last year. The association between the two platforms is initially limited to the United States, but a statement on Plex’s website says international markets will also see an improvement in free content in the near future.

“Given that Plex streams to over 200 countries, we’re working on new partnerships to deliver even more free streaming content to all our friends around the world in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more on that front shortly”, says the firm.

Thousands of free titles from Crackle that may now be streamed to American Plex users include Captain Phillips, Hell’s Kitchen, 3rd Rock From the Sun, Big Fish, Snatch, The Illusionist and Starship Troopers. Crackle offers free ad-supported access to movies and series from major studios like MGM, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, and Legendary, according to Canaltech.

Plex started as a way to organize and stream personal media collections. That’s still the main draw, though the company has also been experimenting since last December with a free, ad-supported streaming service.
