iFood announces BRL 1 million fund to assist couriers with COVID-19

The help is valid for both those who have COVID-19 and those who need to be quarantined

The Brazilian delivery startup iFood announced this Saturday a BRL 1 million fund to help couriers who stop due to the coronavirus outbreak. The help is valid for both those who have COVID-19 and those who need to be quarantined.

The news was revealed by Diego Barreto, the startup’s financial director, exclusively to journalist Bruno Capelas, from the newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo. The NGO Ação da Cidadania will be responsible for managing the fund.

“After demonstrating by medical certificate or via telemedicine that he is showing symptoms, the courier will receive food or a sum, for his food and his family’s subsistence, with the help of the NGO, for 14 days,” explained Barreto to the newspaper.

Further details are yet to be defined next week.

Brazil is the Latin American country with the largest number of confirmed cases. The entire region already has more than 250 confirmed cases, and health officials expect this number to be quite high in the coming days

On Friday (13), Chinese Didi Chuxing, owner of the Brazilian delivery startup 99, announced that it will make $10 million available to his drivers and couriers worldwide.

The Colombian Rappi sent a message for its users from the CEO, Simón Borrero, on Sunday night saying that the company is working tirelessly with local authorities and health experts to provide the highest level of security in our services. “We will seek to guarantee the supply of essential items. In case of unavailable product, we ask for understanding, as we will do everything possible to offer a replacement for what you need.”

Rappi said is also delivering 70% alcohol gel, disinfectants and masks to Personal Shoppers for use before and during the delivery of any and all orders. “We are working on several key processes to ensure the quality of your order, including the importance of closing all delivery bags with security seals. So we guarantee that no one has handled your order since it left the restaurant’s kitchen”, he said.

It will enable a home delivery option with no physical contact. The company also created a fund to protect community of delivery partners and is importing thousands of antibacterial gels and masks – in addition to conducting education, self-care and prevention campaigns. Rappi recommends to costumers, when receiving the product, unpack the contents and then wash hands. It’s also recommended to use digital payment methods to avoid handling banknotes or coins.
