HBO Max will launch on May 27th with plans to reach 90M global users by 2025

The service will be one of the strongest competitors to Netflix and is set to debut with 10,000 hours of content

HBO Max, the new WarnerMedia streaming service, will be launched in the United States on May 27th, joining a growing market in which traditional media and technology giants try to compete with Netflix and establish their video-content businesses.

HBO did not reveal any plans to bring HBO Max to Latin America, and there are still no forecasts of when the new streaming service will be available in regions outside the U.S.

The service is expected to reach 75 million to 90 million global subscribers by 2025, with about 50 million of these coming from the U.S., the company said earlier.

A field crowded with giants

HBO Max is also set to compete with Disney+, which crossed 50 million paid users globally earlier this month.

Netflix Inc reported its first-quarter earnings on Tuesday after market close, with good results related to social isolation measures adopted around the globe against the coronavirus pandemic.

10,000 hours of content

HBO Max is set to debut with 10,000 hours of content, including movies, original content, and classic shows. Popular sitcoms like “Friends” and “The Big Bang Theory” will be available on launch, alongside HBO originals like “Westworld”, “Big Little Lies” and “Game of Thrones”.
