A quarter of Colombians paid for video streaming services in 2019

By far, Netflix is ​​the subscription-based service most used in the country. When free platforms enter the account, YouTube is leader

  • On subscription-based streaming, Colombians look for series (40%), movies (37%) and documentaries (33%); on traditional pay-TV, they seek news (66%), soap-operas (58%), reality shows (56%), and sports (48%);
  • Almost half of the population (43%) have already abandoned traditional SMS, and in this segment, WhatsApp (96%), Facebook (59%) and Skype (6%) are the favorite brands.

A new report by Colombia’s Communications Regulatory Commission (CRC) revealed that only 24% of Colombians had paid for video streaming last year. The study on the role of over-the-top (OTT) services, that is, those offered through the internet, also shows that Netflix is the favorite platform in the country, with 17% of respondents mentioning it, followed by Claro Video, HBO Go and DirecTV Play each with 3%, and Amazon Prime and Movistar Play each with 1%, according to La Republica

If the survey includes free video platforms, users reach 33% of respondents, with YouTube being the preferred service, with 26%. On subscription-based platforms, Colombians look for series (40%), movies (37%) and documentaries (33%).

In addition, the study says that young people between 15 and 26 years old are the ones who consume the most audiovisuals (43%), and half of them (53%) watch audiovisual content for more than 8 hours a week online. On the other hand, 38% of people who do not consume OTT services are over the age of 51, married and have children.

Regarding the pay TV sector, 71% of Colombia’s households use this service, which includes cable and satellite TV, and the content most sought after on them are news (66% ), soap-operas (58%), reality shows (56%), and sports (48%). CRC concluded that “OTTs continue to be a complement to the pay TV service”.

Voice calls and messaging

Analyzing voice platforms, the CRC study says that 74% of Colombians used apps to make them in 2019, while conventional phone calls are used by 87% of people. In this market, WhatsApp is the absolute leader, grabbing 70% of calls.
