Streaming services already attract 2nd largest viewership in Brazil, says UOL

Of all Brazilian broadcasters, the only one that has a larger audience than streaming is Globo

  • UOL‘s columnist Ricardo Feltrin revealed that in June, between 7AM and midnight, streaming had a 15% share of viewers in Brazil;
  • Officially, there are currently about 15.3 million households subscribing to pay TV in the country, a decrease of 23% in four years.

Video-streaming platforms such as Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, GloboPlay and others already attract the 2nd largest viewership in Brazil, according to Ibope, a survey company, as reported by UOL. Together, the service follows the country’s biggest broadcaster, TV Globo, in number of viewers.

Each point in Ibope’s rating is equivalent to approximately 250,000 households, says UOL. Exclusive data obtained by UOL‘s columnist Ricardo Feltrin points out that in June, between 7AM and midnight, streaming consumption was 7.0 points and had a 15% share in Brazil.

Of all the broadcasters, the only one that has a larger audience than streaming is Globo, with 15.0 points and a 32.6% share. Feltrin says that streaming stole the second position from cable TV, since, in June, the paid channels added up to 6.3 points.

Officially, there are currently about 15.3 million households subscribing to pay TV in the country. At the end of 2014, there were almost 20 million. According to Ibope’s data, the ranking of audience in Brazil in June was, in points and share (%):

  • 1 – Globo – 15.0 points and 32.6%
  • 2 – Streaming – 7.0 and 15.1%
  • 3 – Pay TV – 6.3 points and 13.7%
  • 4 – Record – 5.5 and 12.0%
  • 5 – SBT – 5.0 and 10.8%
  • 6 – Band – 1.5 and 3.2%
  • 7 – RedeTV – 0.6 and 1.4%
