Amazon attracts investors in Colombia and considers new distribution centers in Brazil

Global tensions between the US and China seem to be nudging Amazon toward a bigger presence in Latin America

The trade war between the US and China is raging on, and so does the competition between Amazon and AliExpress. Only five days after AliExpress opened its first physical store in Madrid, Spain, the American retail giant Amazon is also making its move in Latin America, following two different announcements this Friday (30th).

The president of Ospinas, Juan Pulido, said to the Dinero newspaper that several enterprises in Colombia were investing in a combined logistics project to build a large distribution center (DC) for large retail companies, setting their sights on Amazon. Among the companies partnering to build the logistics infrastructure of about 300 acres near the El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá are the following: Corficolombiana, Colpatria, Juan Gaviria, and Ospinas.

The head of retail of Amazon Brazil Daniel Mazini also announced to the Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo that after the success of their distribution center in Cajamar (São Paulo), Amazon was considering expanding its presence with other centers in the country.

Since the launch of the Cajamar center in January, the American retail store has sold and delivered more than 200 thousand products in Brazil. This has opened Amazon’s appetite for expansion.

“It was the capacity that we believed was sufficient for that first moment. We are now learning that such a capacity might not be sufficient. We have the option of expanding our own DC or get into others. We are analyzing,” said Mazini in an interview to Estadão.

Clearly global tensions are pushing retailers to take gambles and push their presence further in emerging markets. Who said a “little” nudge would not make a difference?
